Live Music Returns to Nitten Folk Club

After a COVID induced break of nearly two years live music returned once again to Nitten Folk Club. We got off to a fabulous start when John Graham and Jim Jack graced our stage for an evening of wonderful music and friendly banter on Thursday evening. Despite the continuous drone of the air-con, and a few issues in getting the PA system up and running, it was a great evening. John & Jim treated us to the best of Scottish song writing, as befits two gentlemen who have been part of the folk scene for more decades than they care to admit to. Highlights included Graeme Miles’s ‘My Eldorado’ and the Brian McNeill classic ‘Strong Women Rule Us With Their Tears’.

Those attending were all advised to take a lateral flow test before attending, and face masks were the norm (we’re still adhering to COVID advice after all) but there was no damping the enthusiasm of an audience that had been waiting patiently for this day to finally arrive. They applauded, they cheered and sang along with gusto to many (most) of the songs performed.  This night had been a long time coming and it was going to be savoured by all present.

There were, of course, the excellent floor spots: Ronnie, Gillian, May & Janis, Jim and new member Jane, entertained us before the main event, with lovely renditions of beautiful songs. The annual dilemma of what to do with those unwanted Christmas presents was solved as the ever-popular raffle helped to re-allocate many of them. All in all it could be honestly said that a good time was had by all.  Thanks must, of course, go to the committee members, for organising the evening, and to the management and staff of the Dean Tavern for all their help and support.

Next month we will be welcoming Stephen and Pernille Quigg. Stephen was for many years a member of the legendary ‘McCalmans’ folk group.  Since the band broke up in 2010 he and he his lovely wife Pernille have been entertaining audiences across the country and beyond with their beautiful renditions of traditional and contemporary songs.  This promises to be another great evening at Nitten Folk Club. We look forward to seeing you there.
